While I was watching RAW this week I was trying to wrap my head around John Cena’s current storyline. It was surprising to me that his role in the hyped three on three Elimination Chamber match against The Shield was so quickly replaced by Chris Jericho. While I understand that Wrestlemania is the company’s large draw, I couldn’t help but be agitated that Cena so quickly gave up on his crusade against The Shield and decided to move on against The Rock. Jericho’s motivation for joining the battle against The Shield is equally as baffling. This leads me to my larger concern, and that is the WWE hasn’t been doing a very good job lately when it comes to wrapping up storylines. I understand that they are in a unique position as they must appeal to the casual fans (more episodic plots that start and conclude each week) vice the hardcore audience (giant story arcs that take weeks or months to resolve). In this sense, I can understand why John Cena was involved in an essential throw-away role just to sell seats at the Elimination Chamber. Yet, in his conquest for redemption after last year’s loss to The Rock, fighting a match against The Shield seems tangential at best. In support of our favorite superstars, it is hard to be drawn into a story when the endings are foggy and there is no resolution. It leads us asking “Why did this happen?” In an industry when suspending disbelief is a requirement, the last thing the WWE needs to do is take away the human aspects of the show and muddle with character motivation and conviction. It will be interesting to see how the WWE handles the eventual departure of Jericho and The Rock. I hope their departures are not disruptive to the community and that their stories have clear, logical conclusions.
