Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron made the light heavyweight limit ahead of their clash on April 20.
It is the biggest fight of both men’s careers based on everything that played out in the first fight. The bout ended in a split-decision technical draw, 58-57, 57-58, and 58-58, after the fight was stopped in the fifth round. Whittaker and Cameron fell over the ropes. While Cameron was fit to continue, Whittaker was not able to do so, as he needed medical assistance.
Whittaker was sent to the hospital, with Cameron later accusing him of quitting. Cameron was aggrieved since he was arguably in control of the fight before the stoppage. Whittaker has said he will prove his doubters wrong, while Cameron knows a win propels his career further. Ben hit the scales at 175 pounds, while Cameron weighed 174 pounds.
“Yeah, it was kind of cute looking into each other’s eyes, but you know, it is what it is, man. And all that looking into each other’s eyes, all this talking — it comes to an end tomorrow. Yeah man, Turki was feeding me up too much, so we came back home — we’re on the curry goat now, so you saw the shape on the scales. I looked good. I don’t really understand what he’s saying, so he needs some subtitles when he’s talking. But at the end of the day, you’ll see how big I am in there Sunday.
“Yeah, of course, a lot of people have got things to say, but when I come out shining Sunday, we’ll let them keep talking. We’re prepared for everything. We’ve ticked every boxing camp. I’m in great shape. It’s very cliché when people say “I’ve had a great camp.” Trust me, you’ll see,” Whittaker
“He’s getting smaller, isn’t it? Yeah, getting smaller. It was the same like last fight — he got smaller and smaller. Didn’t you watch me outboxing him for like three rounds? Yeah, well he was the golden boy, weren’t he. They’re going to favor him over there. I was just coming in there to get beat on paper. So if it’s a draw in Saudi and the big guys are fighting, what does that tell you? It’s gone beyond that point now. It’s fight time.
“They weren’t as good as I thought. But this is a new fight and a fresh fight and I’ll have to keep that mentality. Yeah, 100%. He doesn’t know what happened. I’ve already spoke about what happened in fight camp and stuff. That was his best. That was his best. That was his time to shine in Saudi, to get everyone behind him, and he failed it.
“Preparation-wise, yeah [it’s the best camp]. I’ve done 100 rounds sparring. I’ve gone from cruiserweights, heavyweights and everything. I’ve been sparring. Everything’s on point. I’ve been doing the rounds great in sparring. I’m hoping I can get him out of there late,” Cameron
