Former champ signals zero hesitation if a blockbuster crossover bout is offered

Fresh off a much-needed rebound victory, one of boxing’s most feared punchers is once again back in the spotlight. Deontay Wilder recently returned to the win column on June 27th in Wichita, Kansas, where he dispatched Tyrrell Herndon. After dropping Herndon with a cuffing left hook in Round 2, Wilder eventually closed the show with a seventh-round stoppage, reminding fans of his knockout power. Now, attention has quickly shifted to what could be next for the former heavyweight champion.

In a recent interview with Brian Mazique, Wilder addressed the possibility of a showdown with Jake Paul.

The former WBC heavyweight champion made it clear there would be no hesitation if that call ever came. ‘Nothing has been presented to us, at the moment it’s not real, but if it came my way of course I’m 100% taking it,’ Wilder said. He praised Paul’s ability to generate money and pack arenas but also made it clear that the YouTuber-turned-boxer hasn’t taken the traditional route.

‘It’s a more brutal road than that. Some of these guys in their lifetime would never see $50,000, it just doesn’t go like that,’ Wilder explained. He went on to add that while Paul chooses his opponents carefully, his popularity is undeniable. Still, Wilder warned that if the fight happens, Paul would face a harsh lesson: ‘It would be a reality check, I’ll give him a real experience.’

Outside of Paul, another name continues to surface—Francis Ngannou. The former UFC heavyweight champion recently called for a matchup in an Instagram post, writing, ‘It’s time to finally settle the debate. @bronzebomber.’ With Wilder back in the win column and multiple high-profile options on the table, the stage is set for another major moment in his career.
