Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman LA Presser: Welcome To The Thurman Show

At Wednesday afternoon’s PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) press conference to formally announce the October 25 WBC junior middleweight title fight between Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) and Keith Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs), all eyes were on the former unified champion to carry the presser with his charisma.

Those in attendance, aside from Fundora and Thurman, included junior middleweight Jesus Ramos Jr., who will be facing Shane Mosley Jr. (wasn’t there), and WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster and WBC featherweight champion Stephen Fulton Jr. The runtime on the presser was about 50 minutes, and the highlights all came from the 36-year-old Thurman, who knows just what to say to get everyone’s attention.

“Well, What Should Be Done First Is Get Apollo A Ladder”

Thurman was in full “One-Time” mode at the presser as he wore a grey bedazzled Mike Tyson t-shirt. He wasted no time in reminding those who may have forgotten that this was the Thurman Show.

This is what the sport is all about, said Thurman. “You put Thurman’s name next to anybody and I guarantee you it’s gonna be a fight you won’t wanna miss.

“I’m about to conquer Mount Everest himself. They call him ‘The Towering Inferno’, but I’ve been in the fire. This is what I live for right here. This is the top of the sport.

While Thurman was providing all of the energy, the WBC champion Fundora was quiet and had few words. This has been the one knock on the 27-year-old from West Palm Beach, FL. He has zero personality, so it’s hard to get behind someone who doesn’t give you anything more than a few words. To his credit, he has tried to come out of his shell more lately, but he still has a long way to go.

Fundora said at the presser, “I do believe I’m the best at 154 right now. I’m focused on continuing this reign and doing what I’ve been doing.

“A win would continue to show that I’m doing the right thing. We’ve come so far, headlining a pay-per-view as the ‘A-side’ and it shows how blessed I am. I’m gonna keep doing my job and keep winning.

As the presser concluded, Thurman went to walk off the stage and fell completely off it. Luckily, he was okay and the fall did not jeopardize the fight in October. When he made it to the face-off, Thurman continued to be the showman that he is.

With Fundora having a six-inch height advantage, the famous line from the 1985 smash hit Rocky IV came to mind, where Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), suggested that Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) should get a ladder to face Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). Thurman must have had the same thought, so he grabbed a chair and stood on it so he could look directly into Fundora’s eyes without looking up. It seemed to get everyone to chuckle, so that box was checked.

Now that the fight is officially announced, it’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out. Fundora appears to be peaking, while Thurman has the experience to give Fundora some problems on fight night. All will get settled on October 25 when Fundora defends his title against Thurman live on PPV.
