Nick Saban highlights areas of improvement for Alabama after scrimmage

The dust has cleared from Alabama’s first scrimmage of fall camp and the quarterback cake is still baking.

This means no one has separated, but Nick Saban did share with reporters all the signal-callers made good throws.

He has a talented team; however, there are areas that need improvement. Coach Saban highlighted the wide receiver room, stating players are having issues with drops. He also noticed mental errors from the defensive line that need work.

“We still jumped off sides too many times when there was a hard count,” Saban said. “We have a ton of things to work on, but if we didn’t have a ton of things to work on, why would we have 20 more practices before the first game?”

Saban mentioned the receivers made some good catches, but he wants the consistency to be better.

“If you are a receiver, why do they call you a receiver? You are supposed to be able to catch the ball,” he said. “That is what receiver means, and you should never drop a ball. That is something we have to stay focused on.”

Defensively, Alabama has some guys ready to play winning football. Saban wants more guys from the defensive line to emerge.

“Jaheim Oatis has had a good camp,” he said. “Justin Eboigbe has had a good camp so far. He’s trying to bring some of the young guys along to be able to play. Tim Smith is a little up and down, he needs to be more consistent. Everybody has something they can work on and that’s what we are focused on.”

No stats were unveiled for the quarterback position.

Saban said the coaches will watch film and evaluate how they did. He wants to see more guys develop on the offensive line. Alabama has six to seven guys that can play if the season started now, but Saban looks to have more ready to play.

Consistency is the key to the drill after the first game-like practice.
