Breaking into the music industry has never been easy—and for many artists, the path to stardom isn’t always a straight shot. Before they became household names, some started behind the scenes, writing hits for other people or lending their voices as background vocalists. It’s all part of the grind. But those early gigs often laid the foundation for major solo careers.

Here’s a look at some artists who started as songwriters before stepping into the spotlight themselves.

Throughout her songwriting career, she wrote songs such as Chloe x Halle’s “Do It,” Brandy’s “Rather Be,” Chris Brown’s “Drunk Texting,” and Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next.”
