In the decades since Adam Sandler's legendary Happy Gilmore film, a number of the stars and co-stars of the film have sadly passed away. This week, another iconic cast member of the film sadly passed on.
Morris the Alligator, a live alligator that was a character in the original film, passed away this week.
Taking to Instagram, Sandler offered his condolences to Morris. He recalled that during the original filming the crew would require "40 heads of lettuce" to keep him happy. He offered thanks to Morris' caretaker for managing him through his final years.
"Goodbye, Morris. We are all gonna miss you. You could be hard on directors, make-up artists, costumers - really anyone with arms or legs - but I know you did it for the ultimate good of the film. The day you wouldn’t come out of your trailer unless we sent in 40 heads of lettuce taught me a powerful lesson: never compromise your art. I will never forget at craft service that time when we split the Three Musketeers bar and you let me have the bigger half. But that’s who you were.
"I know your character’s decapitation in the first movie precluded your participation in the sequel, but we all appreciated the fruit basket and the hilarious note. I will miss the sound of your tail sliding through the tall grass, your cold, bumpy skin, but, most of all, I will miss your infectious laugh. Thanks to Mr. Young for taking care of you all these years, and vaya con dios, old friend."
In the film, the alligator eats off the hand of Derick "Chubbs" Peterson (played by the late-great Carl Weathers) and Happy Gilmore fights and kills the alligator to retrieve a ball that it ate.
Happy Gilmore 2 is slated to release later this year. According to reports, Morris the Alligator will now receive a dedication in the film.
Some of the other beloved cast members from the original film that have passed on include Frances Bay (Grandma Gilmore), Richard Kiel (Mr. Larson), Joe Flaherty (Donald the unruly fan), Bob Barker and of course Carl Weathers (Chubbs).
