Since the 1980s, the Disney Channel has produced a slew of television films just for tweens, many of which have since earned cult-classic status. For millennials and Gen Z viewers, watching each week's new Disney Channel original movie was appointment television when we were kids. Now that many of these films are available for streaming on Disney+, it's time to indulge in a little nostalgia.

Hocus Pocus 2

While it isn't technically a Disney Channel original, there are few Disney films that were more long-awaited than "Hocus Pocus 2." The sequel to the original, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, was an instant hit when it was released on Disney+ in 2022.

Released in 1999, "Johnny Tsunami" is arguably among the most memorable Disney Channel originals. It follows Hawaiian surfer kid Johnny Kapahala as his family moves to Vermont, a place not exactly known for its massive waves, and confronts the legacy of his grandfather, a legendary surfer. The Color of Friendship

Inspired by actual events in apartheid-era South Africa, "The Color of Friendship" earned an Emmy Award, among other accolades, in 2000. Critics praised its handling of racism in both the United States and South Africa through the lens of friendship between two teen girls from totally different worlds. Stream on Disney+.

The Cheetah Girls

Inspired by a series of books written by Deborah Gregory, "The Cheetah Girls" is a Disney Channel original with a serious cult following. The film was expanded into a TV show, live tours, and merch after being the first musical film to air on the channel in 2003. A sequel followed in 2006.

Speaking of musicals, arguably the most iconic of all the Disney Channel Original movies is "High School Musical," which is a pretty self-explanatory franchise.
