A sequel to the 1988 Beetlejuice is on the horizon, and Michael Keaton spilt the beans on the behind-the-scenes action to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Horowitz asked Keaton if the project was an easy yes for him, and Keaton said, "It was a long time, years and years of Tim and I discussing, dropping it, going off to other things, saying 'should we?' Then it was a no, then it was a yes, then it was a no". Keaton said he and Tim Burton were "cautious about even talking about it".
Speaking on Burton's process, Keaton said, "There are certain things he can't explain, and it's really hard for him to explain, so, then when you see it and you show up, you go 'oh, I see it, I get it'".
"We finally got a script, and I said, 'Yeah, I think we gotta do this'," Keaton said. However, it wasn't an immediate yes. Keaton had some concerns, which were quickly remedied by a test shoot.
"I showed up, and we shot one of those particular things I was concerned about. I went, 'Oh my God, how do you not do this? This scene is too great. First of all, visually, someone has to photograph this. It's just tremendous'," Keaton said.
What about the performances? Keaton has high praise. "I can't tell you how good everyone is in it," he said, explaining that we can expect great things, particularly from Catherine O'Hara. "If you thought she was funny in the first one, double it."
Keaton reprises his original role of Betelgeuse in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is due to hit theaters on September 6.
