Baking doesn't have to be scary: 15 easy recipes to fool your friends into thinking you know what you're doing

For even the most experienced home cooks, baking can remain an untamable dragon – a blend of science, art, and alchemy that eludes all but the most determined. It's no secret that baking requires incredibly specific measurements, as well as increasingly difficult methods of dough-making, kneading, and mixing, but not all pie, tart, bread, and pastry recipes are like this. Indeed, you can fool your friends into thinking you're a finalist on The Great British Bake-off; all it takes is the right recipe.

One-Bowl Chocolate Cake

One-Bowl Chocolate Cake
Allrecipes

As previously stated, the worst thing about baking is the way that, often, batters and doughs need to be babysat for a while, poked and prodded to perfection lest your cookies come out more like hockey pucks. Most cakes, however, don't require this level of attention. This recipe, in particular, simply requires that you dump a whole bunch of ingredients into a bowl and mix. It'll taste better than the stuff from the box, and it's only slightly more time-consuming. The full recipe is here.

Cast Iron Skillet Corn Bread

Via Alex Guarnaschelli, this recipe for corn bread is incredibly simple, and endlessly modifiable. If you've never made cornbread before, you may be surprised to know that it's not made from a dough like other breads – it's closer to a pancake or brownie in that it's made from a batter. This means that all you have to do is whisk together a bunch of ingredients and throw them into a pan to create the perfect accompaniment for chili. Consider adding cheeses, hot peppers, or even fruits to augment the flavor – this cornbread can stand alone as a dessert if you prepare it accordingly. Here's the full recipe.

Okay, so maybe you don't have a rice cooker, and that's your excuse for not making bread. Bad news – you can make bread in the slow cooker. No excuses left – especially since this method of cooking works with any kind of bread dough. Simply set your cooker to high, and cook for between an hour and 2 1/2 until everything is set. And hey, if you want that deliciously crusty top, you can always pop the baked bread in the oven for a bit at the end. The Kitchn has full instructions here.

Unlike their close cousins biscuits and croissants, scones are (relatively) fool-proof and easy pastries to make. There's no folding of dough and no odd go-by-feel technique required to determine when the dough has come together. All you have to do is mix until everything barely comes together into a wet dough, roll it out, and cut out circles. Pop it all in the oven, and you have scones in 20 minutes. The full recipe can be found right here.
