Ben Stiller explains why a fourth "Meet the Parents" movie is happening now

A fourth "Meet the Parents" movie is in the works. It's been 15 years since the last movie, "Little Fockers," and it's now been 25 years since the original i.e. the only one with a reasonable claim at being a good comedy. There was recently a 25th anniversary screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, which was convenient because it meant Robert De Niro showed up. So did Ben Stiller and Teri Polo. Obviously, legacy sequels are a dime a dozen, but Stiller has a considered reason for why the time is right for another movie. The question is whether or not you think it holds water.

"I think what spurred the idea was that at this point in time, I’m the age that Bob was when we did the first movie," Stiller explained, with the Bob in question being De Niro. He also went a little deeper on it.

It’s exciting that we’re going to do it again and be together, and I think life informs everything that’s happened in the last 25 years, and it’s been a while since we did the last one. So, it’s kind of great to look at it as a sort of a new thing. But of course, there’s all these great memories, and I feel like our connections are still there when we get back together. It’s just all baked in there.

Also, apparently De Niro has been clamoring for a fourth movie since the days of shooting "Little Fockers." Ariana Grande has joined the cast for this one, and there is a rumor the premise will involve the son of Stiller and Polo's characters introducing his new fiance, an unpleasant woman played by Grande.

In terms of legacy sequels, Stiller does make the case for why this is a reasonable time for a fourth "Meet the Parents." That bar is cleared in our book. Now, it just has to be, you know, good. We'll get a good sign when we find out the title. If "Focker" is in the title, we'll know we're in for a tough watch.
