Comedy legend Mel Brooks returning for "Spaceballs" sequel

Comedy legend Mel Brooks built his career on silly nonsense and meta humor. His 1987 parody of "Star Wars" entitled "Spaceballs" is almost empirically dumb, but it's also very funny. In that movie, Brooks plays a Yoda parody named - again, with wonderful dumbness - Yogurt. Yogurt is big on merchandising and he speaks of a hope to see the ragtag crew in "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money." Well, a "Spaceballs" sequel is finally in the offing, and Yogurt will be there to get some of that sweet, sweet cash.

Little is known about the movie, including whether or not that subtitle will be used. Although, if it isn't, what's the point ultimately? Josh Gad is starring, but he and Brooks as Yogurt are the only known cast members. John Candy and Joan Rivers have passed on and Rick Moranis has been retired for years, so don't count on any of them. We mean, really don't count on Candy and Rivers, because if either shows up it will be profoundly disconcerting. Fingers crossed for Bill Pullman, though!

The provided logline for the film, in Brooksian fashion, calls it, "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film." It's being co-written by Gad and the team of Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez who have worked on the scripts for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" and "Detective Pikachu." Those are two movies we'd declare, "Better than they had any right to be." Josh Greenbaum is directing.

Brooks will only be acting in the "Spaceballs" sequel, and one assumes his role will be brief. Also, hopefully it will be shot as soon as possible. Not to sound alarms, but the dude is turning 99 later this month. The "Spaceballs" sequel is going to be released theatrically in 2027, but surely they can get some Brooks bits shot in the Yogurt makeup with some expediency. "Spaceballs 2," like tkatziki, just wouldn't be the same without Yogurt.
