You’re about to see a side of Wolverine you’ve never seen before, according to Hugh Jackman.
Speaking at a fan event in Shanghai, China, the actor revealed his character in Marvel’s upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine is different to previous portrayals.
The script features "sides of Wolverine that I've never played before, and that challenged me as an actor and excited me," Jackman said. "I feel in many ways fans of Wolverine — because of Deadpool, because of [co-lead Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy], are going to see a fuller, more different side to him than you've seen before. And that was thrilling for me, and I hope it is for you."
Jackman also admitted he was ready to give up the character after playing him for what he thought was the X-Men mutant’s swansong with 2017’s Logan. "I thought I was finished with it seven years ago," Jackman said. "But as soon as we came up with this idea, I knew that this was the matchup that people wanted, that I wanted, that Ryan wanted, that fans wanted."
Jackman has played Wolverine across nine X-Men movies between 2000 and 2017, including the Wolverine trilogy. With his outing in Deadpool and Wolverine, that’s a total of 25 years in the role.
Deadpool and Wolverine, however, ranks among the best movie-making experiences of Jackman’s life. "This experience exceeded anything I've done before as this character — and in many other movies, in anything. I loved it…The movie has a warmth to it, and it's funny, and it's irreverent, and the action is crazy. But I think you can feel the friendship."
Deadpool and Wolverine opens in theaters July 26th.
