Ed Sheeran gushes over being a dad: 'This has actually given me purpose'

Ed Sheeran was put on this earth to write and sing songs, but since the birth of his daughter, the four-time Grammy winner has realized he has so much more to offer.

"I really, really love being a dad," Sheeran said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "I started off my job being my hobby, and therefore, I did it every day. And then one day, I got paid for it, and it became my job. And then I did my hobby every day, but it was also my job. When I had time off, I would still do it. I stopped tour, and then go into the studio because I love the studio. I'd stop studio and go back on tour because I love touring. I just found I didn't really have any purpose outside of that."

"When I was giving myself fixed time off of, like, 'no work!' I wasn't doing anything I enjoyed because I love doing music," the 30-year-old chart-topper continued. "This has actually given me purpose and something in life that's actually more important than my job."

Sheeran noted that "being away" from his wife, Cherry Seaborn, and 15-month-old daughter, Lyra,  is "really, really difficult," even though he's only due to be in the United States for four days. He also shared that Lyra is "now walking, talking, constantly with a bit of bread in her hand."

Sheeran and Seaborn were married in a super private, small ceremony in January 2019.

Much more recently, in late October, Sheeran released = (Equals). The project  became his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.

On Ellen, Sheeran performed single "Shivers." Watch the appearance below.
