Geena Davis is ‘still waiting’ to see progress toward eliminating ageism for actresses in Hollywood

This May marked 30 years since Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon debuted as the titular duo in Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise, and Davis was more optimistic back then about the state of ageism and sexism in Hollywood.

"The change hasn't really happened yet," the Oscar-winning activist told Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning. "Still waiting."

Davis stated that while onscreen gender representation is "50-50," an improvement from when she truly began as an activist in 2004 by leading a study in the space and providing studio executives with the resulting data, there is still much work to be done specifically for older women.

"It's much different for female actors past 50 than male actors past 50," the Beetlejuice and A League of Their Own star said. "The majority of female characters, I believe, are in their 20s, and the majority of male actors are in their 30s and 40s."

Now 65, Davis spoke from personal experience: "I'm working to get more female roles in movies and TV, that at some point this will actually benefit me personally, but so far it hasn't. ... I mean, if you look at people in my age range, they're so few that are really getting, that are really working steadily, you know? There's just very few parts for people my age and older, you know? So, it's just bad odds, basically."

Davis did cite Black Widow as a glimmer of hope that those in positions of power are beginning to understand women can successfully carry blockbusters. And to that point, Black Widow director Cate Shortland and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige "didn't want it to feel like [Scarlett Johnasson's character] needs the support" of her male Marvel superhero counterparts.
