Phew. Remind us to never cross George R. R. Martin. We’d rather take on White Walkers and dragons than be the objects of his wrath. Because when he delivers a scolding, he DELIVERS it. Recently, Martin preemptively (but probably accurately) aimed his anger at fans who are always angry when he shares anything he’s doing that’s not about Game of Thrones, and more specifically, about Winds of Winter. Martin was sharing news of his work on A Dozen Tough Jobs, an animated adaptation of his late friend Howard Waldrop’s book, which reimagines the Twelve Labors of Hercules. Instead of celebrating A Dozen Tough Jobs, though, Martin veered RIGHT into rebuking any of his “fans” that didn’t want to take joy in the news. (There’s a little irony here, but we suppose having so many people berating your every move does get exhausting.)
Martin seethed in his angry blog post:
I know, I know. Some of you will just be pi--ed off by this, as you are by everything I announce here that is not about Westeros or THE WINDS OF WINTER. You have given up on me, or on the book. I will never finish WINDS, If I do, I will never finish A DREAM OF SPRING. If I do, it won’t be any good. I ought to get some other writer to pinch hit for me…
I am going to die soon anyway, because I am so old. I lost all interest in A Song of Ice and Fire decades ago. I don’t give a s--- about writing any longer, I just sit around and spend my money. I edit the Wild Cards books too, but you hate Wild Cards. You may hate everything else I have ever written, the Hugo-winners and Hugo-losers, “A Song for Lya” and DYING OF THE LIGHT, “Sandkings” and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, “This Tower of Ashes” and “The Stone City,” OLD MARS and OLD VENUS and ROGUES and WARRIORS and DANGEROUS WOMEN and all the other anthologies I edited with my friend Gardner Dozois, You don’t care about any of those, I know. You don’t care about anything but WINDS OF WINTER. You’ve told me so often enough.
But at the end of his post, Martin’s angry sentiments softened, and he added, “Thing is, I do care about them. And I care about Westeros and WINDS as well. The Starks and Lannisters and Targaryens, Tyrion and Asha, Dany and Daenerys, the dragons and the direwolves, I care about them all. More than you can ever imagine.”
Martin’s brutal rant aimed at fairweather fans seems right from the heart… Angry, but impassioned. And it’s clear he DOES care a great deal about the world of Game of Thrones and The Winds of Winter. We imagine the pressure at this point is immense. Still, we can’t help but wish that instead of spewing hundreds of angry words for those who don’t support him, Martin had just spent his blog post celebrating this new film that’s clearly near and dear to his heart.
Or maybe he knew that A Dozen Tough Jobs would get more airtime if he also appended one of his signature takedowns to it. If so, well played. Here we are writing about it. Hopefully, George R. R. Martin can find time for all his projects, including The Winds of Winter, very soon, and in the meantime, not have to deal with too much ire as he does other things.
