Henry Cavill may be exchanging his glorious Superman cape for a dark Sith robe. The Man of Steel actor is rumored to be in talks with Lucasfilm for a villain role in an upcoming Star Wars project.
The thought of Cavill wielding the dark side of the Force is too enticing to ignore. Additionally, the actor isn’t a stranger to superhuman roles with his beloved portrayal of Geralt in ‘The Witcher.’
While nothing has been confirmed by the studio, industry scooper MyTimeToShine recently shared on X, “The role Cavill had talked about with Lucasfilm is a VILLAIN role.” That one post was enough to send fans into a frenzy. Could Cavill bring his commanding presence to a Star Wars antagonist?
Currently, several ‘Star Wars‘ films are in development. Films about the origins of the Force or a prequel to The Rise of Skywalker are already in the works. Additionally, Star Wars Rebels co-creator Simon Kinberg is rumored to be developing a new trilogy.
For Cavill, stepping into the Star Wars universe would be a dream come true. Back in 2016, he expressed his desire to play a villain in the franchise, saying, “I secretly want to be a bad guy in Star Wars.” Now, nearly a decade later, that wish might finally be coming true.
Henry Cavill’s departure from the ‘Superman’ role in the upcoming DC Studios film wasn’t a simple firing. According to James Gunn, the new film focuses on a younger Superman, necessitating a different actor. Gunn clarified that Cavill “was never cast” for ‘this’ iteration, emphasizing that it’s about finding the right fit for ‘this’ story.
Moreover, while Cavill’s 2022 cameo in ‘Black Adam’ fueled hopes of his return, the leadership change at DC shifted the direction. Gunn’s vision involves a fresh start for the DC Universe, and this includes recasting iconic characters. However, the decision wasn’t made lightly.
Additionally, Cavill had even announced his return in October 2022, prior to Gunn and Safran’s involvement. This makes the situation complex, as Cavill acknowledged the “changing of the guard” and the studio’s need to build a new universe. He expressed disappointment but wished the new team well. While fans may mourn the loss of Cavill’s Superman, his villainous return to Star Wars is a very exciting prospect.
