Jack Reynor to star in new version of "The Mummy"

The world of "The Mummy" may be about to get a whole lot nastier. Lee Cronin, who directed the gory "Evil Dead Rise," will be directing a new take on that classic monster trope. His film is scheduled to be released in April 2026, and we don't know a ton about it yet. What we do know, though, is that it has a star in Jack Reynor.

Reynor has been seen in films such as "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and "Midsommar" as well as TV shows like "The Peripheral" and "The Perfect Couple." Little is known about Cronin's "The Mummy," but it has been said that Reynor is playing a man "who runs afoul of supernaturally sinister forces." Thus, it appears he will be playing a living protagonist, and that means the titular mummy still needs to be cast.

The Mummy is one of the classic Universal Monsters, and of course most Millennials need not be reminded of the Brendan Fraser version of "The Mummy" for 1999. Also, you may remember when Universal took a bold swing at a shared universe, the "Dark Universe," which died on the vine after the lack of success for Tom Cruise's "The Mummy." In the wake of that, a couple of Universal Monsters have gotten small-scale, pared-down horror films produced by impresarios of the genre Blumhouse. Those would be 2020's "The Invisible Man" and 2025's "Wolf Man."

"The Mummy" is also a Blumhouse production, but notably it is not a Universal release. Instead, New Line Cinema, now a subsidiary of Warner Bros., is the home of the project. New Line also brought "Evil Dead Rise" into the world for Cronin. The casting of Reynor, an actor some may recognize but by no means a star, does seem to indicate this will be another pared-down take on a classic movie monster. Cronin's involvement also indicates it will be decidedly more of a horror movie than Fraser's rollicking '90s adventure.
