We're used to seeing a mustached Jason Sudeikis encouraging fictional athletes by now, as Ted Lasso has swept the world off its feet.
Leave it to the Foo Fighters to add an unexpected twist.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees premiered a music video for "Love Dies Young" on Thursday. Directed by Dave Grohl, Sudeikis stars as an intense synchronized swimming coach who lacks Ted Lasso's signature light, tenderhearted demeanor.
"How lucky are we?" a blond Sudeikis tells his swimmers in a thick European accent. "We get to do something that we love, that we're good at. How lucky are we? You get to do your synchro. I get to coach you. I get to coach champions. Potential champions. Today is the most important competition of your lives!"
He continues, while pacing: "I yell at you because I love you. You listen to me because you love me. Is this a weird dynamic? Yeah, sure, from the outside. To losers! Your lifts need to be higher than Christ!"
This meandering monologue goes on for another two minutes before the song kicks in. The swimmers trot out to the pool and turn toward the camera, revealing each Foo Fighter's face to be superimposed on each swimmer's body. They perform their routine while singing the Medicine at Midnight track. The judges aren't impressed as things go awry in the water, but the group rebounds to earn a perfect score.
