Jessica Simpson is back to making music, releases new song

The other day, whilst watching linear television as one does, we saw a commercial for Chicken of the Sea featuring Jessica Simpson. This ad, of course, exists to riff upon an infamous moment from MTV's "Newlyweds" wherein Simpson expressed uncertainly as to whether or not the Chicken of the Sea she was eating was tuna or chicken. Honestly? It may be purely a nostalgia-clutching marketing ploy, but the commercial is pretty endearing!

It turns out that ad, while new to us, hit the airwaves (and the internet) in January of last year. So what gives? Why was Chicken of the Sea trotting out this old Jessica Simpson ad like she's Santa meeting the M&Ms? Well, because Simpson is reemerging into the popular consciousness. The one-time pop superstar is making new music for the first time in a long time.

Just how long are we talking about? Simpson's last album came out in 2009, and that was "Happy Christmas." As we all know, holiday albums only count on technicality. Simpson has announced a new EP called "Nashville Canyon" that will be released on March 21. She's also released the first song from that EP, "Use My Heart Against Me."

Sure, Simpson's press release announcing the new EP did include the phrase, "music makes you un-become to become," but that's more "buzzword-y industry nonsense" and less "Is this tuna or chicken?" After over a decade on the periphery of showbiz while the other pop divas of her generation remained, in one way or another, active, Simpson is back. And also dead certain on the difference between tuna and chicken.
