Jurnee Smollett stars as Michelle Calderone in Apple TV+'s Smoke, which premieres with its first two episodes today. New episodes will be released every Friday through August 15.
Inspired by true events, “Smoke” follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.
The actress spoke with Yardbarker about her character, experiencing the show's twists and turns, and the value of shooting practically:
"The finale was not written when I signed on to do the show, but they did send me, I think, the first seven episodes to read once I signed on. I initially read the first three, and then they sent seven, and it was like I was reading one of Dennis' novels, like just kept going, 'Oh my gosh, what happens next,'" she expressed. "I was reading it as a fan, which is a good side because oftentimes I couldn't predict what was happening. So many shocking twists and turns, and no one's who they say they are, everyone's wearing a mask and no one's safe, but that makes for the best kind of suspense thrillers, doesn't it?"
This fictional series is inspired by truth.media's Firebug podcast, hosted by Kary Antholis, who serves as an EP on behalf of Crime Story Media, LLC.
