Who doesn’t love a game of Mad Libs? Just fill in the words and make a fun story. Well, we finally have a good look at Hideo Kojima’s newest project, one he’s working on with Jordan Peele, and it brings us the scariest and most creepy Mad Libs game we’ve ever seen. It also just freaks us out, full stop, and now we can’t stop looking behind us. This OD teaser trailer is aptly titled OD: Knock, and it sounds like it represents only one facet of the game. The OD trailer also gives us serious P.T. vibes. For those who don’t know, that’s the infamous playable demo for a cancelled Silent Hill game that Kojima created but which never came to life. It seems like Kojima is reclaiming the work that never was. But this OD trailer stands on its own PERFECTLY. (Perfectly creepy.) Watch it below.
The OD trailer begins with you guessed it, an ominous knock that won’t end. And then a creepy card is slid in through a slit in the closed door. The text on the screen of the OD trailer reads, “Ten Years since the REDACTED horror REDACTED, “REDACTED.” The cursed REDACTED have once again REDACTED into the forbidden. Then we return to the creepy card which has an eerie stylized face on it. Or, upon closer look, this facet of the OD trailer actually reveals something like an anatomical heart full of eyes. Yikes!
A shaking hand picks up the card and flips it. On the back text reads, “Light the fires to celebrate their REDACTED.” Ostensibly this is our first trailer clue to how the gameplay of OD will work. You’ve received a mission and now you’d better fulfill it… or else. Eerie music plays. More text reads, “This building was REDACTED from a 3D scan of an REDACTED found in an REDACTED. And the, REDACTED were REDACTED in a sinister ritual. Gulp! Are we now part of that ritual?
The next thing we see is a hand opening a new door, and indeed, approaching an altar of candles in an attempt to light them. The room is dark, and outside, a storm is howling. We have shivers up our spines. Of course, it doesn’t help that the candles resemble creepy babies that bleed red blood and cry like real babies when lit, and every so often, a terrifying knock at the door disrupts our efforts, accompanied by weird noises.
Then the door opens. WE ARE NOT BUILT FOR THIS. Heavy footsteps fill the space and menacing meaningless whispers sound. We finally see the face of OD’s main character in the trailer, played by IT’s Sophia Lillis. Strange, face-shaped markings are appearing on her own face as she trembles in fear, then she screams as hands reach out and snatch her. Yup, we need to watch this OD trailer only in the daylight.
Kojima shares of this OD trailer, “There is a different kind of fear Jordan [Peele] will do. Mine is the ‘knock’, is the fear. I really am afraid of big knock sounds.” And indeed they are scary. It sounds like Peele will bring a whole different kind of fear to life, hinting at the levels of scares we might find in OD. Kojima adds, “It’s really scary, and you’ll probably do in your pants.” Nice.
OD is being developed using Unreal Engine and it sure is looking good. is being developed using Unreal Engine noted, “Development is well underway. Kojima is innovating in gameplay, story and player engagement. We’re collaborating closely, and we very excited for what’s next.” Kojima also revealed he scanned real-world creepy locations to create the game, sharing, “I want to scan a ghost for the first time, and I want to get an award for that.” Why not?
Ultimately, does the OD trailer tell us even one single thing about what the game will be about? Nope. But is it really freaking scary. Yes. To get more insights into what might happen, you can check out Kojima’s P.T. Silent Hill demo. It feels like OD is the answer to the Silent Hill game that got away. Take a look below.
The cinematic game also stars Hunters‘ Udo Kier and Euphoria‘s Hunter Schafer. But we don’t yet see them in this OD trailer. We guess there will be more to come. Maybe even a synopsis for the game. Not that Hideo Kojima’s games ever make full sense, even when you’ve finished playing them.
