"Minecraft" crushes at the box office with biggest opening of 2025

Not all that long ago, when "Novocaine" topped the domestic box office while making under $10 million, we wondered if the movie industry was going to have to rely on "A Minecraft Movie" to turn things around. We will admit that we were being fatuous to a degree. After all, we were talking about a movie based on the game "Minecraft." Jason Momoa looks ridiculous in the movie. Jack Black is a charismatic screen presence, but he's not a movie star that drives people to the theater per se. Look, we could explicate our skepticism, or we could just let you watch the trailer:

Well, it turns out that, yeah, "A Minecraft Movie" has arrived and completely flipped the script on the box office. It brought in a staggering $157 million domestically, and $301 million worldwide.

That's not just comfortably the top domestic opening weekend of 2025, it's the biggest domestic take since "Deadpool and Wolverine" last year. "A Minecraft Movie" made more in its first three days than "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and that film made over $1 billion worldwide. This is not a big opening relative to this year at the box office. It's a remarkable opening full stop.

If this wasn't already abundantly clear, and it probably was, video game adaptations aren't going anywhere. If anything, this should only push that further. We have a fourth Sonic movie coming, a "Super Mario Bros." sequel, and also a Zelda film is now in the mix. Lock "A Minecraft Movie 2" in for the not-too-distant future as well.

What makes this early success for "A Minecraft Movie" so remarkable, and so likely to generate more and more adaptations from the game space, is how fully driven this whole thing is by I.P. recognition. Mario is a famed character that has been ubiquitous in culture for decades. Even Sonic is a well-known character. "Minecraft" has iconography, certainly, but it lacks the characters, or the narrative, that those other games have. People went to see "A Minecraft Movie" because it is a "Minecraft" movie. Studios are going to pounce on that.

Oh, and "Snow White" fell to fourth and has now made $77 million domestically. Yeesh.
