Rumors have been flying around for close to a year about a series for television based on Twilight, but updates have been few and far between... until now.

During a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference, Deadline reports that Vice Chairman of Lionsgate, Michael Burns, revealed a plot twist in the plans.

"We're going to go out with the Twilight series - an animated series - I think there'll be a lot of interest in that," he said.

Fans were surprised to hear the news that the series was set to be animated despite sources telling Deadline that the vision for the project was always animation-based.

That's all the updates for now, however, as Burns did not divulge any further info on the project.

Twilight initially came onto the scene in the mid-00s when author Stephenie Meyer released her series of four books about Bella Swan, who moves to a secluded town populated by vampires and werewolves.

The first film in the series starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner hit theaters in 2008, making $408.4 million at the worldwide box office from a $37 million budget.

Collectively, the five films grossed over $3.4 billion, made waves in pop culture and still hold a special place in Twi-hards' hearts to this day.

Fans have been skeptical about how successful a television series will be, seeing as the saga is so beloved, but the animation aspect gives it an edge it didn't have before.

Time will tell what the consensus will be.
