By dint of barring no holds on "Last Week Tonight," John Oliver is no stranger to having beefs with public figures. On occasion these yield lawsuits which, even with the largesse of HBO's legal team behind him, can't be pleasant. As such, the latest kerfuffle will likely land in a much more palatable fashion, especially since tongues are in cheeks. The creative team behind "Phineas and Ferb" have started a "rap beef" with Oliver which is, for now, entirely one-sided.
A bit of context. Oliver was on Andy Cohen's "Watch What Happens Live," a show usually devoid of anything interesting owing to Cohen's seeming lack of interest in engaging in any topic other than what he happens to be articulating. Not the best interviewer, is what we're saying. Oliver was talking about what his kids are watching and Disney's "Phineas and Ferb" came up. Oliver praised the show for being "actually genuinely funny" which is true. It's much more in the vein of a cartoon that is family friendly but isn't insipidly talking down to children, and also seems to realize parents will likely be at least passively watching as well.
The issue, such as it can be called an issue, is that Oliver had no idea what channel "Phineas and Ferb" is/was on. He speculated that it was PBS. That's not ideal for the show's creator, given that "Phineas and Ferb" is returning from a decade-long hiatus with new episodes. They'd probably like it if people knew they could see it on the Disney Channel or Disney+. Well, if you want attention, you can always start a rap beef.
Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh (both veterans of "Rocko's Modern Life" for you Millennials out there) created "Phineas and Ferb," and saw fit to post a jokey video on social media to call out Oliver's lack of channel awareness. They also suggest Oliver can make amends by lending his voice to the show. That seems entirely doable, and hopefully Oliver will be so inclined.
The first new episodes of "Phineas and Ferb" in many years air on the Disney Channel on June 5. They don't feature Oliver's voice ... as far as we know.
