There been a lot of speculation of what will become of James Bond now that the British spy is fully an intellectual property under the auspices of Amazon. The massive conglomeration bought out creative control from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, which was standing in the way of Amazon being able to replace Daniel Craig as Bond and get another film going. Well, we're now getting out first Bond of the Amazon era. You will be able to see him in 2026...in a video game.
The game "007 First Light" will come to us from the same company that makes the "Hitman" games, which seems fitting. This is not just the first Bond property of the Amazon era, but the first new Bond game since 2010, and that game was the Craig version of Bond. We know what you're thinking, at least if you are of a certain age. Yes, "GoldenEye" for Nintendo 64 ruled. Here's a little taste of it from when it was revamped for the Switch, just for some mid-article good vibes.
Hakan Abrak, the CEO of IO Interactive, the company behind the game, discussed how this is a young Bond, a prequel-esque Bond.
He is not a completely perfectly cut diamond from day one. He’s not a Bond that is completely on top of his game yet, he’s not very well-versed in the tuxedos and martinis yet. It’s something that he is being introduced to, this rough world of espionage.
It's worth noting that video games don't get turned around in a day, so "First Light" has been in the works for years. That is to say, production on this game started when Broccoli and Wilson still were involved in the process. The duo (particularly Broccoli) may have kept Amazon from being able to do what they wanted on screens big and small, but a video game perhaps felt less precious to them.
That being said, does this game tell us anything about Amazon's plans for the Bond franchise on the big screen. Namely, will the next Bond be young? Will the franchise reboot again as it did with "Casino Royale?" Maybe "First Light" is telling us what to expect when Amazon is able to start making Bond movies and get their Bond cast. Or maybe it's telling us they plan to do a "Young James Bond" TV show. You know, the kind of thing Broccoli and Wilson would hate. Well, it's not their call any longer.
