Sandra Bullock recalls traumatizing 2014 home invasion: 'I wasn't the same after that'

Midway through the new episode of Red Table Talk, Willow Smith mentioned that she had her first home broken into while away on vacation last Christmas, and it clearly struck a chord with guest Sandra Bullock.

"You were invaded in the worst way," Bullock said.

Smith said she "had a whole moment; it was rough," but it wasn't as bad as it could've been because she wasn't home.

"My house was broken into, [and] I was in it," Bullock shared, referring to this 2014 home invasion. "It's a different story, especially when you've been watching Last 48 Hours or Dateline. I was literally in the closet going, 'This doesn't end well.' I'm in closet, doesn't help! But it was the one night that Louis wasn't with me."

Louis is Bullock's now-11-year-old son, whom she adopted as an infant in early 2010. (She later adopted her daughter, Laila, as a three-year-old in late 2015.)

"It was the one night that our nanny goes, 'Let me just take him to my apartment,' which is up the street, 'because you're gonna be out late,'" the Oscar winner continued. "And I went, had he been home, I would've run to the closet—it's now my official closet, but that was his bedroom—and it would've changed our destiny forever. So, why wasn't he home on that one night? And that violation of that. I wasn't the same after that. I was unraveling."

Bullock also shared that she hasn't been alone since that day and ultimately treated her PTSD with EMDR, which stands for eye movement and desensitization reprocessing therapy, after noticing that she would "start sobbing" every time she specifically looked left out of a car.

Joshua James Corbett was convicted on one felony count of stalking and one felony count of first-degree residential burglary after pleading no contest in May 2017. He received five years probation.

And even after the trauma Corbett caused Bullock, she showed empathy for him on Red Table Talk.

"This is what's sad is that the system failed him," she said. "There was an altercation with SWAT, and he killed himself."

Corbett, 42, died in May 2018.
