Steve Carell gushes about his "remarkable" 'The Four Seasons' co-star Colman Domingo

Along with starring as Danny, you might not realize that Colman Domingo had a role behind the camera when it came to The Four Seasons. That's right, he also directs the sixth episode, "Ultimate Frisbee," which marks his first time directing a half-hour comedy.

"The thing I know for sure, before I know anything else, is that I’m very patient," Domingo told Tudum. "I know that actors will not give it to me on the first take, that they have to feel comfortable. You have to let people make their choices, and find their way."

Six old friends head for a relaxing weekend away only to learn that one couple in the group is about to split up. The three couples, Kate and Jack, Nick and Anne, and Danny and Claude, are completely upended by the news. Over the course of a year, we follow the friends on four vacations, and watch how this shake-up affects everyone’s dynamic — sending old issues and new bubbling to the surface.

Steve Carell, who plays Nick, expressed, "He’s one of those actors that makes an excellent director because he understands everything that actors are going through. Everyone is so calm because he’s calm. If we’re running out of light, there’s not a care in the world. You don’t feel any anxiety coming off of him. He gives great, precise notes, but he also lets you do your own thing as your character. He’s remarkable."

And it's true, for Domingo, there was no rush: "I always trust that my cast will get there when we’re supposed to get there."

"Colman directing is really a master class in watching someone who is a jack of all trades," co-creator and director Lang Fisher commented. "Because he would be in a scene, crying, but through his tears, directing the other actor in the scene, and then going back into character to continue crying. He would also be keeping his eye on the actual goings-on, and say things like, 'Is that background guy going fast enough?'"

The rest of the cast includes Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Marco Calvani. All episodes of The Four Seasons season 1 are now streaming on Netflix.
