James Gunn may not have carved out time to develop the Amanda Waller series, but he continues to add projects to his plate at DC Studios. The latest news comes as no surprise: there will be a sequel to 'Superman.' The only mild surprise is the quick turnaround, as the studio looks to strike while the iron is hot.
The sequel, titled 'Man of Tomorrow,' is set to arrive in theaters July 9, 2027. That’s less than two years away, a relatively quick turnaround that helps keep audience interest from fading, even for Superman.
Gunn’s first major move as creative head of DC Studios was 'Superman,' which he wrote and directed. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning more than $600 million and outperforming every Marvel release in 2025.
A teaser image for 'Man of Tomorrow' suggests Lex Luthor will return, possibly with a high-tech suit. In 2026, DC is set to release 'Supergirl' and the horror-inspired 'Clayface,' neither directed by Gunn but part of the same creative slate. For now, the studio appears to be pacing itself with two films a year to avoid oversaturation. The bigger question is whether audiences are drawn to DC films as a whole, or simply to Superman.
