The trailer sums itself up pretty well: "From the horribly beautiful mind of James Gunn."
The Suicide Squad is an unofficial sequel to David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad blockbuster, and its first trailer arrived Friday morning:
Our first trailer. Warning: gore & adult language & supervillains & adventure & heart. Can't wait to see it in a theater with all of you on August 6. #TheSuicideSquad pic.twitter.com/HdqlGVP0lB

The cast is as starlit as it gets. Margot Robbie reprises her role as Harley Quinn, while Viola Davis will do the same as Amanda Waller, but there are plenty of A-list newcomers: Idris Elba, Sylvester Stallone, John Cena, Pete Davidson, and more.

"I have loved the character of Harley Quinn since she debuted as an animated character. It was my privilege bringing her to life in all her nutso glory," Gunn, the DC Extended Universe film's director and writer, tweeted.
In the trailer, a new batch of Belle Reve prisoners are enlisted by Davis's Waller to form Task Force X, and the group of villainous misfits will soon be sent to the ominous island Corto Maltese. "Successfully complete the mission, you get 10 years off your sentence," Waller says during something of an orientation. "You fail to follow my orders in any way, and I detonate the explosive device in the base of your skull." Elba's Bloodsport laments, "We're all gonna die." It seems a safe bet to count that line as foreshadowing, since Gunn warned fans not to "get too attached" to the cast in September 2019:

Gunn previously directed and wrote the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, which is expected to release its third film in 2023.
The Suicide Squad will hit theaters and HBO Max simultaneously Aug. 6.
