What actors and actresses had the best and worst 2016?

What a year it's been. There have been box office smashes and surprises as well as plenty of flops and non-starters, making it a great year for some actors and a terrible one for others. In all likelihood, these designations will flip next year or the year after that, but here's who had the best 2016 and the worst 2016.

Worst: Will Smith

The Fresh Prince turned down the "Independence Day" sequel to star in "Suicide Squad," which made box-office sense, but, a few fun action sequences aside, it's a bad movie. There are script problems, one dimensional characters, unclear character motivations, Jared Leto, and plenty more. Will Smith is now tied to the DC Cinematic Universe, so he's probably not done turning up in clunkers. Unfortunately, his non-comic book movies look fairly grim as well. We're sure "Collateral Beauty" is a perfectly nice movie, but goodness it looks awful.

Best: Chris Pine

Chris Pine appeared to be having an absolute blast in "Star Trek Beyond" and was a revelation in "Hell or High Water," one of the year's best movies. He's so good in both everyone agreed to forget  about the Coast Guard drama "The Finest Hours." Next on the docket is another "Star Trek" and "Wonder Woman," so things are looking further up.

Worst: Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck movies made decent money, but "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" was panned and "The Accountant," which was a modest success, didn't fare much better with critics. His newest, "Live By Night," looks like a good old-fashioned gangster picture though, so maybe his year can be salvaged.

Best: Casey Affleck

While his older brother may have had a rough go of it in 2016, the younger Casey's year was fantastic. He's simply stunning in"Manchester by the Sea" as a broken man forced to look after his nephew and confront an older wound in his hometown after his brother passes away. If he doesn't win Best Actor, it'll be a huge upset. He's also quite good in "Triple 9," a gritty cops and robbers movie that was under-seen when it was released last February.

Worst: Michael Fassbender

Fassbender has had it rough this year. He was one of several cast members who looked checked out during "X-Men: Apocalypse" and his upcoming "Assassin's Creed" isn't inspiring much confidence. Doubly unfortunate are his smaller roles that basically went unseen, like "The Light Between Oceans" and "Trespass Against Us."

Best: Jeremy Renner

Renner was good as always in "Captain America: Civil War" and the perfect partner to Amy Adams in " Arrival." He's got plenty of juicy roles coming up over the next couple of years in both franchise fare and smaller dramas, too.

Worst: Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain was coming off a series of winning years, so she was bound to slump. "The Hunstman: Winter's War" was shlocky and a clear "Frozen" rip-off. Her performance in "Miss Sloane" as a ruthless political operative is receiving praise, though, for the most part, the movie itself is not.

Best: Anya Taylor-Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy burst onto the scene this year with a powerhouse performance in "The Witch." She's also in M. Night Shyamalan's comeback film "Split," which hasn't been released yet, but is getting raves as it's rolled out at festivals. She was also in the creepy "Morgan" as a potentially dangerous clone and pops up in the young Obama flick "Barry." She has a bright future ahead.

Worst: Robert De Niro

The cinematic heavyweight again took an easy payday and starred in "Dirty Grandpa." His return to boxing in "Hands of Stone" was largely ignored, and "The Comedian" is creeping into theaters. In 2017 and 2018 he's set to work once again with both Martin Scorsese and David O. Russell, as well as play Bernie Madoff in an HBO movie, so things are on the upswing.

Best: Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza is a great actor, so while the movies she appeared in this year like "Dirty Grandpa" and "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" weren't all-timers, that she got to play the horned-up scoundrel is quite progressive. She got to play Aaron Burr on an episode of "Drunk History," too. In 2017 she returns to TV in "Legion," a show that looks wild as hell.

Worst: Owen Wilson

"Zoolander 2" was a ton of fun, but ignored. "Masterminds" was lifeless and also ignored. Owen needs a Wes Anderson movie, stat!

12 of 20

Best: Kristen Wiig

Like Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig was in "Zoolander 2" and "Masterminds." Unlike him, she was also in "Sausage Party" and "Ghostbusters," two of the year's funniest movies.

Worst: Chris Hemsworth

While hilarious in "Ghostbusters," no amount of convincing is going to get people to like that movie, apparently. When he wasn't ruining the internet's childhood in that, he was sitting out the Marvel "Civil War" between Cap and Iron Man and then in the dull "The Huntsman: Winter's War." Luckily Thor 3 is out next year and he may have The Hulk and Dr. Strange by his side to lend a hand.

14 of 20

Best: Haley Bennett

She's pretty good as the catalyst who hires the titular gunfighters in "The Magnificent Seven," which is probably going to be a basic cable classic for years to come. She's downright great in "The Girl on the Train" and plays enigmatic and frustrated quite well.

Worst: Miles Teller

Worst: Miles Teller

Between "War Dogs" and "Bleed For This," Teller managed to be in two less-than-great films based on true stories. He also happened to appear in yet another movie in the "Divergent" series and the long-shelved "Get a Job" appeared in theatres and was met with derision. 2017 looks much brighter for him.

16 of 20

Best: Mads Mikkelsen

Best: Mads Mikkelsen

Mads took 2016 by storm as a sorcerer hellbent on bringing the world to an end and has a mysterious role in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Oh, and he's making a video game with Guillermo del Toro and the legendary Hideo Kojima. Not bad.

17 of 20

Worst: George Clooney

Worst: George Clooney
Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Clooney was fine in "Hail, Caesar!" but completely overshadowed by several other performers in that one despite being quite central to the story. "Money Monster" was released in the late spring and seemed like something found in a time capsule from 1998. We're sure he'll get back on feet in 2017.

18 of 20

Best: Ralph Fiennes

Best: Ralph Fiennes
David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images

He's hilarious in "Hail, Caesar!" as a fussy director forced to work with a singing cowboy and is quite good (and dances) in "A Bigger Splash." He's a voice in "Kubo and the Two Strings," one of the year's best, too. In 2017, he's Alfred in "The LEGO Batman Movie" and we're sure there will be some other surprises as well.

19 of 20

Worst: Zach Galifianakis

Worst: Zach Galifianakis
Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

No one got out of "Masterminds" unscathed, and Zach is no different. "Keeping Up With The Joneses" was a real slog, too. However, 2017 is looking good: His acclaimed show "Baskets" returns in the winter, an appearance on "Bob's Burgers" is likely, and he's The Joker in "The LEGO Batman Movie."

Best: Blake Lively

Blake Lively appeared in one movie in 2016 and that movie was "The Shallows." It's great, quite possibly the best this-animal-wants-to-kill-me movie since Jaws. She owns the part of a desperate surfer, trapped out on a series of sea-based structures looking for some way to survive. "The Shallows" is pulse-pounding and fun and will have you gripping your seat until the very end and half of that is Lively's performance. Turns out she can act a bit.
