Chicago White Sox fans received some shocking news on Thursday when TV play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti departed to take the same role with the Detroit Tigers.
It was easy for the South Side faithful to speculate why Benetti left his hometown team. The 40-year-old's national TV duties often pull him away from baseball, something the Sox previously accommodated but were reportedly not thrilled about. The Jerry Reinsdorf-owned organization is known for its dysfunction, and it seems the status quo was at play regarding Benetti's departure.
Additionally, Reinsdorf wasn't a huge fan of Benetti’s broadcasting style, especially his humor, according to Dan Berstein of 670 The Score.
It's another tough pill for Sox fans to swallow as Benetti was one of the few reasons to continue watching the team despite an abysmal on-field product in recent years. He has a unique, fun style of broadcasting that resonates with fans across the board and pairs well with the knowledgable but cynical Steve Stone.
Now, the White Sox have to go back to the drawing board in search of a voice to replace Benetti. Reinsdorf isn’t helping the on-field product either, so the Sox will have to find someone entertaining.
