Astros Make Yordan Alvarez Move Two Days After Return

The Houston Astros are entering the final month of the season with a slim 1.5-game lead over the second-place Seattle Mariners in the AL West.

Although the division remains highly competitive, the Astros recently regained an AL MVP candidate as Yordan Alvarez returned to the lineup on Monday after a three-month absence due to a right hand fracture and multiple setbacks.

After a frustrating rehab process, Alvarez has immediately picked up where he left off in 2024—collecting four walks, two hits (including a home run), and two RBIs in just eight plate appearances.

The 28-year-old left-handed slugger’s presence comes at a critical time for an Astros offense that has struggled in August, ranking 25th in MLB in runs scored.

Astros Proceed Cautiously with Yordan Alvarez’s Usage

Ahead of Wednesday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies, manager Joe Espada removed Alvarez from the starting lineup after just two starts since his return.
Mauricio Dubon took over in left field, while Jose Altuve slotted in at designated hitter.

Alvarez has stated that his hand feels good enough to play and hasn’t hindered his performance at the plate. However, it’s clear Houston will manage his workload carefully—at least until the postseason arrives.

Alvarez’s career began with a dominant stretch, earning the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year unanimously after hitting 27 home runs and driving in 78 RBIs in just 87 games. Since then, he’s collected a World Series title (2022), three All-Star selections, and a Silver Slugger award across seven seasons with the Astros.

Though only 28 years old, Alvarez’s veteran leadership and playoff experience add value to a clubhouse already anchored by veterans like Altuve and Carlos Correa—potentially the edge Houston needs to hold off Seattle down the stretch.
