Padres Demote Pitcher During Dodgers Series 

Adam has posted a 2.51 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 36 appearances this season. He has also recorded 22 strikeouts across 32.1 innings, giving the Padres another experienced option for the middle and late innings.

Canning, meanwhile, heads to Triple-A after spending much of the season working between the rotation and bullpen. The right-hander has made 29 appearances, including 11 starts, and has a 5.57 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over 85.2 innings.

The move gives San Diego another healthy arm as the regular season enters its final days. Adam’s return also gives manager Craig Stammen another option when deciding how to distribute work among his relievers.

Canning’s demotion does not erase his contribution to the Padres this season. He has provided innings in several different roles and could remain part of the organization’s pitching depth as the club moves toward October.

For now, the Padres will have Adam back in their bullpen while Canning continues his work in El Paso. With the postseason approaching, San Diego will have a short window to evaluate its pitching options and settle on its October roster.
