Dagestan continues to produce a steady stream of rising prospects in combat sports, with Magomed Zaynukov emerging as one of the latest names gaining attention. These fighters have become more visible at major events as the region’s influence grows. During UFC 322 fight week, Dustin Poirier met Zaynukov backstage, bringing the veteran face-to-face with one of the newest fighters from this wave.

Poirier’s career remains one of the most accomplished in lightweight history, marked by top-tier victories and multiple championship-level performances. His final fight came at UFC 318 against Max Holloway, where he delivered an action-packed performance before officially retiring. Since stepping away, Poirier has focused on family, business pursuits, and enjoying life outside active competition.

Despite retiring, Poirier has acknowledged that staying away from MMA is difficult, as the urge to compete still lingers. He remains connected by attending events and staying active within the community. That continued involvement placed him backstage at UFC 322, where he crossed paths with ‘Chanco’, who was in Islam Makhachev’s corner for his welterweight debut against Jack Della Maddalena.

During their backstage interaction, Poirier playfully attempted a D’Arce choke on Zaynukov, referencing the same submission that Makhachev used to defeat him at UFC 302. The light-hearted moment also included Poirier comparing Zaynukov’s look to Makhachev, linking the young prospect to the champion he assists. The clip underscored Poirier’s comfort and humor even in retirement.

Zaynukov has built momentum through his recent performances, showcasing a blend of striking and finishing ability rooted in his Muay Thai and kickboxing background. ‘Chanco’ recently earned a UFC contract when he put on a dominant performance against Lucas Caldas on Dana White’s Contender Series Week 9. Training alongside Makhachev’s circle has also further elevated his profile.

As Zaynukov continues to build his name, observers have begun to note similarities between his sharp striking and the qualities Poirier has displayed throughout his career. Dustin Poirier was known for durability, powerful boxing, and a willingness to engage in high-level exchanges. Magomed Zaynukov’s early performances suggest a path that could carry similar excitement.

Dustin Poirier poses a major problem for Jack Della Maddalena ahead of Islam Makhachev fight

Dustin Poirier and Islam Makhachev met at UFC 302 in a five-round title fight that pushed both athletes to their limits. Poirier entered the bout determined to claim the lightweight belt, battling through high-pressure grappling exchanges and momentum swings before being submitted in the final round. Despite the intensity of the contest, both fighters have maintained strong mutual respect in the aftermath.

In the lead-up to UFC 322, questions have been raised about how Makhachev’s striking will hold up against a specialist like Jack Della Maddalena, who has built his reputation on precision and finishing ability. As analysts and fans discuss whether Makhachev can neutralize an elite striker in a fresh matchup, Poirier has offered insight drawn from his own firsthand experience.

Its gonna come down to Jacks timing, takedown defense, wall work and his ability to keep Islam in punching range without worrying about the takedown. Same thing for me what I did, Islam made me a worse striker. I couldnt plant my feet to throw off combinations and dig down into punches because I knew if my feet were set to land a power shot that he was going to get to my legs. You know if you miss one of those ounches your balance is going to be off and you are going to be taken down.

The wider stakes of this matchup stretch beyond the belt alone. Makhachev aims to prove his versatile style can endure one of the division’s sharpest striking champions. At the same time, Maddalena looks to show that elite stand-up can trouble a dominant lightweight moving up. Poirier’s perspective adds clarity, drawing from his own experience with Makhachev to frame what another top striker may face.
