The NBA is now so global that many of the league’s best players are not from the United States.
Nikola Jokic (Serbia), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Luka Doncic (Slovenia), and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada) were all born elsewhere.
This means that international tournaments, such as the ongoing EuroBasket, are more competitive than ever before.
Those following the European competition this summer will be familiar with many of the top performers, except for one ex-Toronto Raptors player.
The top three leading scorers at EuroBasket 2025 so far are Doncic, Antetokounmpo, and Lauri Markkanen (Finland).
High-profile NBA players Dennis Schroder (Germany), Franz Wagner (Germany), and Alperen Sengun (Turkey) are also on top form at the competition.
However, the fourth-highest-scoring player at EuroBasket is Poland international Jordan Loyd, who many NBA fans may not remember.
Rank | Player | Team | Games | PPG | FG% | 3P% |
1. | Luka Doncic | Slovenia | 3 | 33.0 | 42.1 | 30.0 |
2. | Lauri Markkanen | Finland | 4 | 29.0 | 46.6 | 40.7 |
3. | Giannis Antetokounmpo | Greece | 2 | 29.0 | 74.2 | 100 |
4. | Jordan Loyd | Poland | 3 | 28.3 | 58.1 | 61.9 |
5. | Dennis Schroder | Germany | 4 | 22.3 | 53.4 | 44.4 |
Loyd played one season in the NBA (2018/19) with the Toronto Raptors and won the championship alongside Kawhi Leonard and co.
He has spent the following six seasons with teams in Spain, Serbia, Russia, Israel, and France, where he currently plays for AS Monaco.
But perhaps an NBA return could be on the cards for Loyd after outscoring superstar players like Jokic at EuroBasket.
Jordan Loyd only played 12 times for the Toronto Raptors in the 2018/19 regular season and not at all in the playoffs.
He averaged 2.4 points on 44 percent efficiency from the field in less than five minutes per game.
His biggest contribution to the Raptors’ title-winning team probably came in practice during the NBA Finals.
Loyd mimicked Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry so the raptors players and coaching staff could come up with the game plan to stop him
“Jordan has been a true professional all year after a great season in the G League,” Kyle Lowry told The Ringer. “His help has been phenomenal.”
