2023 NFL Draft: What Positions Do Oddsmakers Think Jaguars Target at No. 24?
USA TODAY Sports

The 2023 NFL Draft is shaping up to already be an unpredictable one, defined by movement and bold risks.

For once, though, the Jacksonville Jaguars can kick back and watch the fireworks.

After holding the No. 1 overall pick in each of the last two drafts and taking quarterback Trevor Lawrence and pass-rusher Travon Walker, the Jaguars are now set to pick at No. 24 overall. As a result, the process is set to be turned upside down after the last two years.

"Well, the basic way that it's different as we got 23 people that pick before us, You know, the last couple of years, we've had zero," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said in the first episode of the Jaguars-produced video series "The Hunt".

"So you know, it's our job to get the board stacked, to work hard with the coaching staff, to get as much information about these guys as we can, and make sure we're bringing guys into this culture that fit what we're trying to build here and what we are building here."

As a result of this year's changes, the Jaguars' pool of prospects at No. 24 is going to be unclear until over halfway through the first night of the draft.

So with the Jaguars' possibilities at No. 24 unknown, which direction do oddsmakers think the Jaguars are most likely to go in? We break down FanDuel Sportsbook's props below.

No. 1: Cornerback (+170)

Cornerback is the position the odds see the Jaguars as most likely to select at No. 24, and it is hard to argue against it. The Jaguars have two starting quality cornerbacks in Tyson Campbell and Darious Williams, but there is still a legit question of whether they have a starting nickel on the roster.

Other than the nickel issue, there is also a depth issue. If either Campbell or Williams misses time, the Jaguars will have Tre Herndon, Chris Claybrooks, Tevaughn Campbell, Gregory Junior, and Montaric Brown. Herndon is a solid depth corner and Claybrooks is a good special teams player, but there aren't a lot of names here who offenses wouldn't attack.

So, which cornerbacks could be there at No. 24? Brian Branch is listed as a safety by most, but Grinding the Mocks has his expected draft position between No. 23 and No. 24, so he could easily be the pick here as a nickel corner. As for the rest of the cornerbacks, it appears Maryland's Deonte Banks or South Carolina's Cam Smith would be the best two options.

No. 2: Defensive line/Offensive line/tight end (+300)

This is where the surprises start. It doesn't help that FanDuel doesn't differentiate pass-rusher and interior defensive line, but it is fair to wonder if the Jaguars would be willing to take either position at No. 24 overall. The Jaguars pursued Calais Campbell in free-agency but failed to land him, showing an interest in adding an interior pass-rusher. As for edge rusher, the Jaguars have shown more interest in that position group than any other during the pre-draft process.

The issue for the Jaguars, though, is whether a first-round caliber edge rusher will be there at No. 24. Grinding the Mocks has each of the top-five pass-rushers gone by No. 24, which would leave the Jaguars having to potentially reach for Will McDonald, Keion White, or Adetomiwa Adebawore.

Then there is the crop of defensive linemen who could be at No. 24. It is a weak class at interior defensive tackle, meaning only Georgia's Jalen Carter will likely be off the board by the time the Jaguars pick. This would leave the Jaguars with their choice of Calijah Kancey, Bryan Bresee, or Mazi Smith.

Then there is tight end. It is surprising to see tight end listed even with offensive linemen here considering the Jaguars franchise-tagged Evan Engram. Perhaps the Jaguars envision a two-tight end offense like Doug Pederson had with the Eagles, but the Jaguars already have four high-paid pass-catchers. There is only one football to go around, so this still feels unlikely, even if they could have their picks of tight ends.

Offensive line is an interesting option. The Jaguars' top options at No. 24 would be right tackle Darnell Wright or guard O'Cyrus Torrence, each of whom could start as rookies. Maybe the Jaguars like Walker Little enough at right tackle to not pursue an option to replace Jawaan Taylor, but finding a starting left guard would make sense, too.

No. 3: Linebacker (+2500)

Unless you count an edge rusher as a linebacker, then linebacker won't be the pick. The Jaguars took two off-ball linebackers early in last year's draft and still have Foyesade Oluokun in the middle. They barely have enough snaps to divide among those three, let alone another rookie added to the mix.

No. 4: Safety (+5000)

The only way this is the pick is if you would consider a few niche defenders as safeties. The top two "safeties" who could be drafted at No. 24 are likely Branch and Antonio Johnson, two players who are really just nickel defenders. Whether safety is the pick likely comes down to semantics.
