Aaron Rodgers has strong words for Green Bay Packers wide receivers ahead of 2022 season

People say many things about Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Some good, some bad. There is a great deal of criticism and praise that is warranted. There is also a great deal that is not. One thing that is true, whether good or bad, is that he has notoriously high standards his wide receivers. Without Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the Packers’ roster, the team will go into 2022 with Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb as the only true experienced wide receivers. True, Sammy Watkins is now on the team. However, he has not played with Aaron Rodgers yet. The rest of the wide receiver room is made up of 2021 third round pick Amari Rodgers and three rookie wide receivers. To them, Rodgers had a clear message: production is better than potential.

Aaron Rodgers Sends a Strong Message

In an interview with The Athletic, Aaron Rodgers said:

“I like production over potential. We have some production. We have a lot of potential. So we need to temper expectations and heighten the accountability. I think that’s the most important thing for those guys. There are guys who’ve done some things in the league and there are guys that haven’t and they’re going to get opportunities, so reasonable expectations for those guys and then high expectations and accountability for the entire room.”

Earlier this offseason, there was a question as to whether it was a good idea for Rodgers to skip OTAs. When asked about this, Packers coach Tom Clements stated that it was good for the rookies to learn the play book without Rodgers there.

What Should Expectations Be for Packers Wide Receivers?

As has been stated in many publications by many analysts, no one player is going to replace Davante Adams. No Packers wide receiver is going to put up those kinds of numbers this year. Perhaps Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs will become that level of wide receiver one day, but not yet.

In 2022, the Packers may not have a 1,000-yard receiver. This is fine; they do not need one to win. What is expected, though, is that each receiver does his job to get open and does not drop the ball. Aaron Rodgers is as accurate a quarterback as there ever was. He will put his receivers in a position to succeed. The rest will be up to them.
