Aaron Rodgers signed a new contract with the Green Bay Packers before he was  traded to the New York Jets. It likely won’t be the last contract Rodgers signs this offseason. The contract Rodgers signed this April saved the Packers $14.5 million in cap space for the 2023 season. It was assumed after the trade the Jets might try and give Rodgers a new contract after the trade to restructure his deal.

Aaron Rodgers is negotiating with the New York Jets

According to a report by Rich Cimini with ESPN on Sunday, the Jets and Rodgers are currently negotiating a new contract. The current deal has them on the hook for $1.2 million this season:

“The Jets and Rodgers are in the process of renegotiating his contract, which pays him $1.2 million this year and $107.6 million next year. When it’s done, a chunk of his 2024 compensation will be returned to 2023. Rodgers restructured the deal with the Packers before the trade, lowering his 2023 salary to the minimum with the understanding that it was just temporary.”

It appears the Jets don’t want to be on the hook for $107.6 million next season. The Jets will need to shuffle around some money and contracts to make this new deal with Rodgers. According to Over The Cap, the Jets have $7.5 million in cap space remaining for the 2023 season.

The Packers’ front office has to be happy Rodgers’s contract is the Jets’ headache now. That’s the price of landing one of the best quarterbacks on the market, so we’ll see what kind of new deal they can come up with. It would be simple for the bookkeeper if the Jets were to try and extend Rodgers for more than two seasons. But with Rodgers saying he was “90 percent” retired this offseason, negotiations for a longer deal cap are much harder.

The Jets aren’t the only team from the Rodgers trade that needed to negotiate a new contract for their starting quarterback. The Packers signed Jordan Love to an extension after declining his fifth-year option.
