Commanders unveil 90th anniversary uniform patch
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders will honor its 90 years of existence as an NFL franchise next season. As part of their celebration, the team is adding a commemorative patch highlighting its 90 years.

The “90 years” patch is in the shape of a diamond to represent the D.C. Metro boundary. Two gold stripes within the diamond acknowledge the two stripes from the D.C. city flag. The years 1932 and 2022 are also included along with the team’s “W” logo.

This upcoming season will be the team’s first under the “Commanders” name. They’ll have new uniforms to complete the franchise’s re-branding. Now the new uniforms has an addition for the 2022 season.

The team will celebrate its historic year in multiple ways throughout the 2022 season, starting with the reveal of the 90 years patch. Additionally, the team launched a website, commandlegacy.com. Fans will be able to see a description of the legacy patch as well as help the team add 10 names to its “80 Greatest” list.

The franchise started as the Boston Braves in 1932 before then-owner George Preston Marshall changed the name to the Redskins. In 1937, he moved the franchise to Washington, D.C. and the team became the Washington Redskins, a name it would carry until 2020.

The team dropped the Redskins moniker following pressure from sponsors stemming from a large outcry from the Native American community. The team used “Washington Football Team” as a temporary name placement until the unveiling of the permanent name, the “Commanders” in February.

With the name change, the Commanders are making an effort to link the team’s past and new future. Having the 90th anniversary next season will be a great way.
