Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu got into a heated altercation during Super Bowl LV on Sunday.
After the game, Mathieu said, in a since-deleted tweet, that Brady called him something he "won't repeat." Fans began to speculate that the seven-time Super Bowl champion might have called Mathieu a racial slur. However, NFL analyst and former player Michael Irvin said that the game audio proves that Brady did not use racial language toward Mathieu.
Irvin has access to the clips through his work as an analyst on "Inside The NFL." According to TMZ Sports, Irvin said on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Tuesday that he was upset with Mathieu's tweet after the audio revealed Brady did not cross racial lines.
"I didn't like that Tyrann Mathieu put that out like that," Irvin said. "Because, I go, come on now. It makes it sound as if -- it makes people want to know, 'What'd he say?'
"As if he said the n-word. And he did not. Tom did not. So, you know, I didn't like that even looming over this situation. So that's why I think we should clean that up somewhere, somehow."
It's unclear what Brady actually said. Irvin could not reveal that information due to confidentiality.
While Brady did not say a racial slur, he still likely said something to upset Mathieu. The 43-year-old sent a lengthy apology text to Mathieu after the game and expressed his desire to apologize in person.
