Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins have a history dating back to their time together with the Washington Football Team. With Cousins now “collecting” checks in Minnesota as the Vikings’ starting quarterback and RGIII on the free-agent market, the latter took time out of his Friday evening to blast his former teammate in D.C.
It was in no way subtle.
Immediately after Minnesota selected Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Griffin III had this take.
“Kellen Mond represents exactly what he doesn’t do well. … Cousins has been collecting checks there in Minnesota for a long time.”@RGiii doesn't think Kirk will be happy with the pick @brgridiron— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) May 1, 2021
“Kellen Mond represents exactly what he doesn’t do well,” RGIII said. “Cousins has been collecting checks there in Minnesota for a long time.”
That’s a whole bunch of ouch right there.
The two quarterbacks were members of the same Washington draft class with RGIII going No. 2 overall and Cousins finding himself as a fourth-round pick in 2012.
Despite earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, Griffin III bombed out in the nation’s capital after just three seasons due to injuries that were mishandled by the Washington brass. As for Cousins, he earned the full-time starting job in 2015 before departing for the Minnesota Vikings in free agency ahead of the 2018 campaign.
It’s safe to say that RGIII will not be receiving a Christmas card from Kirk Cousins’ camp any time soon.
As it relates to the Vikings’ decision to draft Kellen Mond in the third round, it’s the clearest tell yet that general manager Rick Spielman is looking for a long-term heir-apparent to Cousins. Mond was among the most-underrated quarterbacks in the entire NFL Draft.
Cousins might put up good numbers, but a lot of his “stats” come in garbage time. He’s also currently playing under a two-year, $66 million contract after initially signing a three-year $84 million contract back in 2018.
Apparently, RGIII thinks he’s a swindle god.
