The Detroit Lions have signed 10 kickers over the last two years, but don’t try telling special teams coordinator Dave Fipp something is wrong with their process.
Sam Ficken finally has another chance. The Detroit Lions signed the former Tennessee Titans kicker on Tuesday as they continue a search for stability at the position that resembles what the Titans went through not that long ago.
The Detroit Lions announced they have signed K Sam Ficken to the practice squad. Detroit’s incumbent kicker, Austin Seibert, has struggled with injuries and consistency so far in 2022. Ficken, 29, wound up signing on with the Jaguars in 2016 as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State.
This move complicates the Titans’ kicker situation yet again.
NASHVILLE – So much for the notion that the Tennessee Titans could enter the 2021 NFL season with any sort of certainty about their kicker. Sam Ficken, who won the job in training camp, was added to the injury report Friday and listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals at Nissan Stadium with a right groin issue.
Inside linebacker is arguably one of the deepest positions on the Tennessee Titans’ roster. That depth will be tested Sunday in the opener to the 2021 season.
NASHVILLE – It’s over. The Tennessee Titans ended their search for a new kicker Monday when they waived (injured) Tucker McCann. The job now belongs to Sam Ficken, who made all three field goals and all six PATs in the first two preseason games.

Less than one week into training camp, a new face has been inserted into the Jets' kicking competition. New York signed kicker Matt Ammendola on Friday, simultaneously releasing Sam Ficken.
The New York Jets have turned to former Oklahoma State Cowboy Matt Ammendola to solve their long-running kicking woes.
And the first casualty of Jets training camp is upon us. Rich Cimini of ESPN is reporting that the Jets have waived struggling place kicker Sam Ficken and replaced him on the roster with former Oklahoma State kicker Matt Ammendola.
It’s early, but Sam Ficken missed one (or two or three) too many kicks to remain on the Jets’ roster. The Jets announced Friday night they have swapped kickers, cutting Ficken and signing Matt Ammendola.
Special teams might have been the Jets’ best unit in 2020, but that was more of an indictment on New York’s offense and defense than anything else. Brant Boyer’s kicking game underwhelmed with Sam Ficken sidelined for the majority of the year, and the Jets seldom benefitted from an explosive kick or punt return to flip field position.
