Dallas Stars Captain Jamie Benn Undergoes Surgery for Collapsed Lung

Benn suffered the injury in the third period of Tuesday night’s preseason matchup against the Minnesota Wild. The Dallas captain was found to have a small hole in his lung according to Nill. There was no word on how Benn suffered the injury.

The longtime veteran is coming off a season where he totaled 16 goals and 33 assists for 49 points in 80 games. Benn also totaled one goal and two assists in 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games. The 36-year-old averaged 15 minutes and 18 seconds of ice time in the 2024-25 season.

Over his 16-year NHL career, the Victoria, British Columbia native has totaled 399 goals and 557 assists for 956 points in 1,192 regular-season games. He’s also registered 28 goals and 52 assists for 80 points in 120 postseason games.

Benn was selected in the fifth round, 129th overall of the 2007 NHL Draft. He’s been the Stars’ captain since the 2013-14 season.

What It Means

The veteran forward signed a one-year pact in the offseason to stay with the club. He may night put in the goals like he used to. However, he’s still an important player on the team’s roster.

He provides veteran leadership and is a very tough player that can mix it up if he has to. Benn has proven this by also recording 879 penalty minutes across his lengthy career.

Nill added that Benn will not be allowed to travel with the team while he’s out with the injury. However, Benn is expected to make a full recovery.
