Second-year quarterback Drake Maye and other members of the New England Patriots addressed adoring fans during a send-off rally on Sunday.
This happened before the team flew out West for the Super Bowl LX showdown with the Seattle Seahawks that will take place at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Feb. 8.
As members of the crowd chanted "M-V-P" toward Maye, he may have called his shot regarding what will be the biggest game, to date, of his young career.
"First off, man, I just want to thank you guys," Maye said, per Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "You guys have been great all season. Man, wouldn’t be here without you guys. What a journey, and we still got work left to do. Shout out to these guys, love you guys. Celebrate when we get back. Go Pats, baby."
While Maye rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown in New England's 10-7 AFC Championship Game win over the Denver Broncos back on Jan. 25, he passed for a paltry 86 yards on 21 attempts that afternoon. More concerning for the Patriots is that Maye spent last week dealing with a sore throwing shoulder after he seemed to land on it in the third quarter of the contest versus Denver.
Both Maye and Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel did their best to downplay concerns related to the signal-caller's health ahead of this past weekend. On Thursday, Vrabel said that Maye’s shoulder responded "favorably" after the quarterback had been a limited practice participant.
In his first season in the job, Vrabel guided the Patriots to a 14-3 regular-season record and to playoff wins over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Houston Texans and the Broncos.
"This is beyond my wildest dreams for the fans to have embraced us in the first year of this program the way that you have," Vrabel added during the send-off, per Campbell. "Every week we played here, it got better and better and better, and that last game we played against the Texans, unreal."
As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to list the Patriots as 4.5-point underdogs against the Seahawks. It could be interesting to see if that line changes depending on Maye's status for upcoming practice sessions.
