In his first campaign with the New England Patriots, wide receiver Stefon Diggs emerged as a major reason the club completed a trip to Super Bowl LX as second-year quarterback Drake Maye became a finalist for the regular-season Most Valuable Player Award.
Nevertheless, Diggs’ future with the Patriots following their 29-13 Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks is up in the air because his base salary of $20.6M isn’t fully guaranteed. Shortly after New England fell to Seattle, Diggs was asked if he expected to remain with the Patriots through the offseason.
"Oh [expletive]. Unless they opt out of the contract," Diggs responded, per Mark Daniels of MassLive. "I anticipate being here, so I hope so. Love my guys. I had a hell of a year playing with them. Built some real family-like bond, so I hope so, I don’t control it though."
Diggs appeared in just eight regular-season games with the Houston Texans during the 2024 campaign before he suffered a torn ACL. Despite that injury, he received a three-year, $63.5M deal from the Patriots last March. He then quickly became Maye's favorite target as New England went 14-3 before the club notched three playoff victories.
ESPN stats show that Diggs led the 2025 Patriots for the regular season with 85 receptions, 102 targets and 1,013 receiving yards. Over 17 games, he tallied four touchdown catches.
That said, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated is among the NFL insiders who pointed out shortly after Super Bowl LX wrapped up that the Patriots could soon part ways with the wideout who turned 32 years old this past November. Diggs previously played for the Minnesota Vikings (2015-19), the Buffalo Bills (2020-23) and the Texans (2024) before he landed with the Patriots, and he seems to want to stay put for at least one more year.
"Had a hell of a time in Minnesota," Diggs added during his postgame comments. "Had a hell of a time in Buffalo. Had hell of a time in Houston. I don’t compare and contrast. You know, comparison is the thief of joy. I had a good time at all those places. Did it work out? No. But I’m happy where I’m at right now and embrace what I got going on here, so I’m just super thankful."
One would think Maye would be in favor of having Diggs as a weapon later this year. However, some within the Patriots may feel that Diggs' best days are behind him and that the club could acquire an advertised upgrade at the position after the new league year opens in March.
