Deal Confirmed: Dutch International Defender Joins Sunderland

Sunderland have completed the signing of Dutch international defender Lutsharel Geertruida from RB Leipzig. The deal is an initial loan with the Black Cats having the option to buy the versatile defender next summer for around €20 million.

The transfer is another sign of Sunderland’s intent to stay in the Premier League this season and beyond. The deal was confirmed via safc.com.

Comfortable in Defence and Midfield

Lutsharel Geertruida is the type of player that Sunderland like to sign. A player who is a natural in one position but is also very comfortable playing in others. New loan signing Lutsharel Geertruida is primarily a right back but is just as good playing in the centre of defence. He has also played in central midfield and at left back.

With the Black Cats set for a tough season, despite their impressive start, players such as Geertruida and others who have signed that are capable of playing in more than one position could prove invaluable.

6ft 1in 25-year-old Lutsharel Emiliano Geertruida began his career at Feynoord, playing over 200 games before joining RB Leipzig for a fee of €20 million in 2024. The defender is also a full international with 17 caps currently for the Netherlands.
