Strengths

Unquestionably, the most impressive aspects of Gonzalez are his athleticism and physical tools. Specifically, Gonzalez measured in at six-foot-six barefoot with a six-foot-ten wingspan and an eight-foot-five standing reach. Plus, Gonzalez also has massive hands as well. His athleticism, strength, and physical tools allow him to be an ideal wing defender who can guard multiple positions and switch defensively. Paired with his high energy and motor, Gonzalez has the capability of becoming an excellent defensive player at the NBA level. He already flashed impressive potential on that end with Real Madrid. In particular, Gonzalez demonstrated himself as an aggressive defender who can hound opposing players. He always tries to stay on his man and make a play on the ball. Gonzalez is also excellent as a defensive playmaker, using his length to poke balls free. Additionally, Gonzalez can cover a lot of ground defensively due to his athleticism and tools.

Offensively, Gonzalez has shown himself as a great off-ball cutter and a solid finisher at the rim. He will always go aggressively to the basket and can finish through contact. While he was mainly playing off the ball, Gonzalez also flashed some on-ball skill as well.

Weaknesses

Undoubtedly, Gonzalez has a lot of work to do on the offensive end. Specifically, he isn’t much of a shooter right now and he needs more consistency in his shot. Gonzalez only shot 29.2% from three in EuroLeague and 27.1% from three in Liga ACB. He will need to improve substantially to become a threat at the NBA Level. Gonzalez is a solid free-throw shooter, which is a positive shooting indicator, but there is a long road ahead of him in terms of his three-point shooting.

Additionally, his decision-making also needs work as he can get out of control offensively. He will throw bad passes or dribble into trouble if he gets surrounded. Due to that, he is turnover-prone and Gonzalez needs to find a way to slow down the game for himself. Defensively, Gonzalez’s aggression can be used against him as he will close out too hard and give his opponent an easy path to the basket.

There are a couple of NBA players that Gonzalez shares similarities with considering his tools and overall skill set. One player comparison is current Charlotte Hornets guard Josh Green. Both are high-motor guards who can be a defensive presence on the wings. Furthermore, they both operate without the ball on offense, performing well as cutters. Another player similar to Gonzalez is Stanley Johnson as he is also a high-motor defensive wing with athleticism. Additionally, both Johnson and Gonzalez are inconsistent as shooters and struggle on that front.
