Inter Miami lost 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final. While both clubs have been among the most successful in MLS in recent years, Miami and Seattle leave the tournament with more than just prize money: both teams have also qualified for the 2026 CONCACAF Champions League.
On the other hand, the clubs will need the prize money to build a squad strong enough to compete in the most prestige club tournament of North-America.
If Inter Miami had won, it would not be certain that Lionel Messi would still be with the team by the time they start playing in the tournament. Meanwhile, most of the Sounders’ current starting lineup have contracts running through the 2026 season.
Sunday best. ✨

While the exact prize pool for this year's tournament has not been publicly disclosed, but previous editions have seen substantial payouts. In 2023, reports suggested the overall purse was around $40 million spread across 47 competing teams, with the eventual winner receiving approximately $2 million.
Both finalists secure automatic qualification for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, providing them with an opportunity to compete on a continental level and potentially increase their earnings through further progression in that competition.

For clubs like Inter Miami and Seattle Sounders, success in the Leagues Cup not only enhances their trophy cabinets but also bolsters their financial standing, allowing them to reinvest in their squads and infrastructure - something that many specialists, broadcasters and former players have been arguing about: the MLS salary cap and transaction limits. Moving forward, they expect the $2 million prize money of domestic tournaments would become a standard salary for the best players in the league.
