Reed Johnson Breaks Foot, Out At Least 1 Month
I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but I do remember Johnson fouling a ball off his foot in today’s game. He came out early and was replaced by Fukudome. The Cubs hoped it was just a bruise, but with the 2009 Cubs luck that wasn’t likely. It’s a broken foot and Reed will miss at least one month. Sam Fuld probably gets the call-up tomorrow.
Lou Piniella: No New Lefty Bat, No Problem
The Cubs solved their lefty pitcher issues by acquiring John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny at the deadline, but failed to address their need for another left-handed hitter to balance out the line-up.
Lou Piniella acknowledges the effort Jim Hendry made to get the trade done, and says he’s not disappointed by the failure.
“Jim tried,” said Lou. [...]
Grabow and Gorzelanny next to go?
No rest for the weary, apparently. Today the story is the Pirates are shopping John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny to the Cubs and it sounds pretty serious. ESPN Chicago is reporting that the two teams are "finalizing" a deal. Given Grabow's status as a potential Type A free agent and Gorzelanny's nice stint in Triple-A this year, I can't imagine Huntington's...

Trade Deadline Week: Thursday Edition
Posted by Lionel on July 30, 2009.UPDATED (2:11 CT): According to John Heyman of SI.com, the Cubs and Pirates are in serious discussions about John Grabow, but the Cubs may be looking to add a second pitcher. With the growing depth in the 'pen (and Hart struggling a little bit in today's game), I'd assume the second pitcher is a starter. That probably means Tom Gorzelanny...
Gorzelanny and Grabow PITCHf/x
Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio and Josh Harrision were dealt to Pittsburgh for left-handed pitchers Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow. Grabow will join Sean Marshall as the second lefty in the Cubs bullpen. Gorzelanny could be off to Iowa, no word yet.I took a look at Grabow yesterday, and figured he's not much different than George Sherrill or Joe Beimel. Gorzelanny has also been covered...
Cubs in good shape for stretch run
Hardball: The trade deadline has passed without another deal being made by the Cubs, who made their splash on Thursday with the five-player trade centering around John Grabow and Kevin Hart. But the way they've played in July, the Cubs may not need as much help as previously believed.
Chicago Cubs Add Left Hander Reliever John Grabow to Bullpen
The Chicago Cubs have traded pitcher Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio, and third baseman Josh Harrison to the Pittsburgh Pirates for left handed reliever John Grabow and left handed AAA starter Tom Gorzelanny.
By completing this deal with the Pirates the Cubs add a much needed left handed reliever to their bullpen that only features lefty Sean Marshall. Grabow has pitched well for the...

The Chicago Cubs Overpaid for Two Lefties Today

Both John Grabow and Chicago-born Tom Gorzelanny pitch left-handed. That's what made the deal necessary.
Just as the Pirates did in trading infielder Freddy Sanchez to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, the Bucs again came away from the trading table...
